Sinister Schooling: Modern-Day Implications of Hampton Model Industrial Schools and American Indian Boarding Schools

Throughout American history, the government has taken various systemic measures to monitor, surveil and control its burgeoning minority populations. In postbellum era, these aims were primarily focused on assimilation cultural genocide modeled, beginning with creation of schools like Hampton Model Schools for Black students Indian boarding Indigenous students. Though neither remain in operation, their spirit lives, particularly as we see Native being funneled into occupational tracks high school, having disproportionately rates suspension expulsion, subjected a whitewashed curriculum that positions them victims, criminals, or non-existent. This work seeks explore linkages between historical institutions current status modern-day schools.
